As a consequence of two emigration waves - after 1938 as well as starting from 1953 (skilled worker) - about 1200 Austrian-born persons live in New Zealand. The most well-known Austrian in New Zealand was the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928-2000). Successful air traffic negotiations were held in 1998 on the initiative of New Zealand.
