Description

Reef Lodge Backpackers in Townsville is not a party hostel, we pride ourselves in being quiet, clean and cheap accommodation in townsville were you can chill out and relax. We cater to international tourist as well as the domestic travellers looking for clean and quiet cheap accommodation in Townsvilles most centrally located backpackers hostel. At 10-30pm we ask people to settle down, respect the other travellers by, keeping noise to minimum and ask people who wish to continue the party to go out to one of the many clubs and pubs. This way people trying to get some quiet time, can relax, take it easy and get a good nights sleep.
Reef Lodge is an older style hostel and was built back in the early 1960s and largely catered to the Stevedore wharf workers that travelled to Townsville for the seasonal work each year leaving behind families and friends for up to 8 months to work loading and unloading ships in what is North Queenslands largest port. These workers would travel from the likes of Brisbane and Melbourne and stay at what was then called Carmen House, named after the daughter of the original owner who built a large portion of the current buildings on the property. Later in the 70s and early 80s there was a change and the managment moved into a new direction which was the backpacking market when it was in its infancy.
In the 90s the property was sold again and was not well looked after and then in 2001 was purchased by the current owners who have spent many years refurbishing and making the Reef Lodge what it is today. Well featured in many on-line and printed review books including a high recommendation in "The Lonely Planet" and with a 4 star ranking on www.hostelcritic.com.
