Description
Bindoon Boots was initially started by Judy Smyth in 1972 selling local crafts from a Bindoon farmhouse veranda, to passing traffic (Bindoon is a small rural town just north of metropolitan Perth). We steadily grew, with the business at its peak in 2008 manufacturing 5, 000 pairs of footwear. In the years following, boots made in China swamped department stores in Australia, which made it very hard to compete with. However, it too konly a couple of years for the buying public to find out there is a difference between sheepskin and synthetic and that cheaper boots are that for a reason. Synthetic boots do not have the natural beneficial properties (eg: non-allergenic, breathable, insulating, durable, elastic and sustainable). Only quality raw materials (sheepskin that has been tanned properly, hard wearing soles) can produce a good end product.
Although the classic вЂugg’ boot is still the most sold and popular boot, we have extended our range of sheepskin footwear designs to cater for a broader age group and alternative styles. Our вЂWild ’N Woolly’ was taken by Liz Davenport to London for the 2012 вЂWool Week’. Our workmanship and design originality have not gone unnoticed; We won the Australian Design Award in 1989 and again in 1992. Winner of the вЂleather section’ at the Western Australian Fashion Industry Awards in 1988. We ended 4th at the Melbourne Shoe Awards in 1987.
Judy was a proud finalist in Telstra Business Woman of the year awards for WA in 1997. After 38 years of changes, relocations and extensions we have kept our (in this day and age) unique formula intact, selling top quality footwear worldwide, while operating from a small scale. Every boot is handmade from scratch in house, by a dedicated team of 5-10 people. When/if visiting beautiful Fremantle, do not deny yourself a visit to our retail outlet/ work shop where the boots are made. Judy herself can usually be found behind one of the machines!
