Description

St John’s Lutheran Congregation in Bundaberg wanted to establish a school that would provide a Christian education for the children of the congregation and would also provide potential for outreach into the wider community. The addition of an extra room to the existing church hall provided two classrooms and an office to facilitate this operation. Being the first protestant primary school in Bundaberg, St John’s was officially opened by the Rev. J. Mayer on the 24th January 1978. The school began with one teacher and an enrolment of 11 students in Years one, two and three.
As enrolments continued to grow it soon became obvious that the present facilities would not be adequate to suit the ongoing needs of the school. Rather than move to land on the outskirts of the city it was decided to purchase properties surrounding the church as they became available. Today the school is a modern, fully air conditioned single stream school with students from Prep to Year Seven. Interactive whiteboards in every classroom and pods of laptops and Ipads allow teachers to integrate technology throughout all curriculum areas. The school is well resourced to support curriculum delivery and has an attractive library with courtyard reading area.
Covered walkways mean all areas of the school are able to be accessed in all weather conditions. In 2011 St John’s Congregation handed the school over to the Lutheran Church of Australia Queensland District. The school and congregation have ensured they continue to work within a relationship of mutual support and co-operation. The school weekly worship service is held at the Church with the congregation minister or family, youth and child ministry co-ordinator usually taking the lead role for the service. School students are involved in Sunday worship services once per school term.
