The Gold Coast Art School was established in 1995 under the name "Southport Art & Film Studios". In the year 2000, the name was changed to what it is now in order to give a clearer definition. The aim of the school has not changed since the beginning, that is, to teach people to paint and draw in a simplified and systematic manner making it easier to understand. We have a practical and "hands on" approach using applied demonstration and technique. Since its establishment, the schools method of teaching has given it a reputation as one of the leading and biggest art schools in Queensland if not Australia which has resulted in several expansions to accommodate student demand.
The school continues to grow as we are working on new rooms and we currently have 5 experienced teachers, each with their own special but unified teaching abilities. Our Approach Our understanding is that anybody can be taught to paint and draw, if you have the desire then you will succeed. Drawing and painting is a learnt technical skill much the same as playing a musical instrument or driving a car. The artistic or expressive side will then come into play.
We also specialise in the enhancement of motor-skills and an awareness in art history, philosophy and archaelogy enabling an ability to access all styles of art. Our initial aim will be to teach you to draw and then paint in a "realistic" manner. This will increase your powers of observation as well as give confidence in the fact that you can do it. However, a little later you will be encouraged to loosen up and try different media, even mixing them together to produce more expressive and original work.
